The Penn Central Railroad Historical Society is pleased to announce an exclusive limited run of Red Caboose X29 panel end Maintenance of Way (MOW) box cars in both Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) and Penn Central (PC) road names. These cars are ready-to-run models with metal wheelsets and Kadee-compatible couplers.
The X29 box car was the backbone of the Pennsylvania Railroad’s box car fleet through WW II and into the early 1950’s. Later, in the 1960’s, these cars were either rebuilt into X29B, C, D, F, G and L sub-classes or downgraded into MOW and company service. These distinctive yellow box cars were a common sight in yards, sidings, and work trains throughout the late PRR years and through the Penn Central and Conrail eras. In fact, some may still be found scattered throughout the Norfolk Southern system (principally in former PRR, NYC, EL and NH yards). Note: One of the two PC cars offered (PC 38496) still sits in Ferrona Yard in Sharon, Pennsyvania (see above).
The Red Caboose cars are ready to run models with metal wheelsets and Kadee compatible couplers. The X29’s are painted in a weathered yellow classic PRR and PC MOW schemes with black roofs and black numbers/lettering. The PRR cars, 469546 and 489547, feature the large plain simplified keystone and gothic PRR reporting marks and black ladders. Penn Central cars 38496 and 38468 are painted faded chrome yellow with black roofs. These cars will be lettered with the large "block" PC. They will have REA marker brackets and other hardware installed. Additionally, 30 cars will be offered painted yellow with black roofs and no lettering for those who prefer to letter the cars to match a specific prototype. These cars will be offered with REA parts installed.
Please note that the Penn Central cars are both now sold out! The PRR and unlettered cars are still available.
This extremely limited run of X29 box cars is limited to 300 models. It is anticipated that these cars will sell very quickly. In order to manage the sale of these kits, prepaid reservations are being taken. Sales will be on a first come basis with postmarks used to determine the priority of sales. When the sale of all models has been completed, any unfilled reservations (with payment) will be returned promptly. Note: All reservations must be accompanied with full payment including postage.
