The PCRRHS 2017 Convention will be held in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on September 21-23. Harrisburg was an important point on the Penn Central system and was the western end of the electrification from Philadelphia. In addition to passenger service through the downtown station, the Harrisburg area also featured Enola Yard and the Rockville Bridge. Today Harrisburg still remains a busy terminal on Norfolk Southern's system. Mark your calendar and plan to attend!
The convention hotel is the Radisson Hotel Harrisburg, located at 1150 Camp Hill Bypass, Camp Hill, PA 17011. Make your room reservations directly with the hotel by calling 717-763-7117. Be sure to mention that you are with the Penn Central Historical Society in order to get our special room rate of $119 per night. This rate is good for three days prior, or three after the convention. We have a block of 40 rooms reserved.
On Friday afternoon, we will be touring Norfolk Southern's TOFC/COFC facilities at Harrisburg and Rutherford PA, which make up one point of their Chicago/Atlanta/Harrisburg 'golden triangle'. These two huge facilities feature overhead and side-lift cranes and have over 3,000 trailer spaces between them.
All NS tour attendees must be at least 16 years of age and must wear long pants and hard-soled shoes or boots. THIS TOUR IS LIMITED TO 70 PEOPLE.
NO SHORTS, TENNIS SHOES OR SANDALS WILL BE ALLOWED ON THE NS TOUR.
On Saturday morning, we will be riding Amtrak from Harrisburg to the Middletown and Hummelstown Railroad, where we will take about a one hour ride behind, and have a photo run-by of, one of their ALCO switchers. We will return to Harrisburg in early afternoon to tour the NRHS Harris Tower museum, which features a hands-on display of trains entering the station on the model board and switch lever machine. You will have a chance to line the switches and signals on the machine yourself! We will also tour Harrisburg station, see the PRR GG1 on display, and railfan the NS mainline.
More information and online registration will be available soon!
